5:00pm: The National Transitional Council (NTC) said three of its fighters were killed Saturday, and VOA correspondent Elizabeth Arrott in the city said rockets from Gadhafi forces and snipers continued to ring out in the area. Ambulances were seen both going into and out of the city.
4:48pm: Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is calling on the Security Council to establish a U.N. mission in Libya to deal with the country’s new rulers for an initial period of three months.
Ban said in a letter circulated Friday that the support mission would provide political, electoral, constitutional, human rights and other kinds of advice to the National Transitional Council as it forms a new government following the fall of longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi.

10:31am: The head of Libya’s new leadership, National Transitional Council chief Mustafa Abdel Jalil, flew to Tripoli today for his first visit since its fighters seized the capital and ousted Moamer Kadhafi, an AFP correspondent said.
Abdel Jalil told AFP his visit to Tripoli from NTC headquarters in Benghazi was “temporary” and that the council he heads would be transferred to Tripoli “after the (full) liberation” of the country.
“Yes, God willing,” he replied when asked if he was flying to Tripoli as he boarded a plane in the country’s second city Benghazi in the east.
10:28: €100,000 worth of German humanitarian aid yesterday departed from Malta, bound for Libya. A Libyan fishing vessel, the Al Entisar was loaded with €100,000 worth of water, medication and baby food, all bought from Malta. The German Embassy in Malta and the Civil Protection Department facilitated the transshipment.
German ambassador Hubert Ziegler told the Malta Independent that Germany was one of the first countries who reacted immediately to calls for humanitarian aid, as soon as the Libyan crisis started last February.
10:17am: Libyan fighters are signing up for a final assault on one of the last remaining bastions of Moammar Gadhafi.
The volunteers are pouring in by the dozens, coming in pickup trucks from cities as far as Tripoli and Tobruk, as a deadline expired on Saturday for the pro-Gadhafi loyalists holed up inside the town of Bani Walid to surrender.
Libyan fighters on Friday launched a two-pronged assault on Bani Walid after a weeklong standoff over a peaceful surrender dissolved.
10:03am: Local journalists in al-Khoms showed Human Rights Watch a video they said had been taken from the cell phone of a Gaddafi soldier, which shows three men in green military uniforms kicking and whipping six bound and blindfolded men in a metal container. Mohanned Jamal Berfad watched the video and identified himself as one of the men being beaten. He identified one of the other detainees getting beaten in the video as his cousin Yousef Berfad, 23, who was arrested for having sent information to the Al Jazeera news network.
9:08am: The sole survivor from the second container found in al-Khoms, Abdelrahman Ahmed Sherif, a 23-year-old upholstery worker, said he was arrested on May 16, on allegations that he was handing out anti-Gaddafi pamphlets, and then taken to the Chinese company grounds, where he spent about 20 days.
