NASA: Solar Flare Can’t Destroy Earth

Feeling the heat from 2012 apocalypticists perhaps, NASA feels the need to reassure people that we won’t be fried in 2012. Mike Wall reports on NASA’s Nov. 10, 2011 statement, for Space.com:

If the world ends in 2012, the sun won’t be to blame, NASA officials say.
Contrary to what some doomsayers would have you believe, our star isn’t capable of blasting out a solar flare powerful enough to burn our planet to a crisp, according to the space agency.
“Most importantly, however, there simply isn’t enough energy in the sun to send a killer fireball 93 million miles to destroy Earth,” NASA officials wrote in a Nov. 10 statement.
The end of the world as we know it?
The Mayans’ “long-count” calendar is set to expire on Dec. 21, 2012, marking the end of a 5,126-year epoch. This factoid has inspired some folks to start girding up for the coming apocalypse — and to start predicting what may bring it about…
No Nibiru, either
The candidates to bring about the end times next year keep dwindling.
Comet Elenin, which some observers speculated would align with other heavenly bodies and spur massive earthquakes and tsunamis, broke up recently after zipping close to the sun.
The supposed planet Nibiru has also been heralded as an agent of apocalypse. The rogue body, which is thought to be four times the size of Earth, will smash into our planet next year and kill us all, some predict.
The problem with that theory is that Nibiru, also known as Planet X, doesn’t exist, experts say.
“There’s no evidence whatsoever for Nibiru,” Don Yeomans, manager of the Near-Earth Object Office at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., said in a recent NASA video. “There’s no planet Nibiru, there’s no Planet X, and nothing is hurtling toward us.”…

This is misnfo. This is a crap story. No one believes that a solar flare will scorch the earth in 2012. No one. This is yellow journalism. Of course it is impossible. However, we are not immune to a Coronal Mass Ejection from the sun. The last one to hit earth and do major damage was in 1859. If we were to have the same CME today, we would be without electricity, possibly world wide. No one in NASA can say that we will not get hit in 2012 by a major CME. They are not prophets. A powerful CME would not be the end of the world, of course! The world is very tough, however, it would be the end of the world as we know it. Imagine no electricity for fuel, water, health care, to cool nuclear reactors, etc. It can happen any day. The NSA did a report on the catastrophe that a CME would cause today. I suggest you read it before dismissing the power of a CME! A Coronal Mass Ejection, like we had in 1859 and may strike in 2012-13, would be the end of the world as we know it. It is not about fire reaching our planet from the sun, but rather the sun's charged particles destroying our infrastructure. Misinfo at it's finest.

I see a lot of people equating the end of the "world" and the end of our society (be it, infrastructure, electronics being wiped out, etc) some would welcome a chance to rebuild.

So NASA says nothing is going to happen. Sorry to say the end of the world as we know it is much more sexy. Every trivial act is significant when the Sword of Damocles is hanging above ones head. The end of life as we know it is interesting and gives a continual adrenaline buzz with an accompanying alkaline flavor much as a roller coaster does, to a bland existence. Whether it's from social upset or mass ejections it makes little difference. Nothing happening is just not interesting. Roland Emmerich would never make a movie about nothing happening and John Cusack wouldn't star in it if he did. You lose by default NASA. Even if it isn't true people would like it to be and that's enough for many to wax and wane in chicken little fetishisms.

The best part is that if people continue to claim the end of the world is coming, someone may very well be right some day. No matter that they said it would be trumpets from heaven or stealthy planets from the abyss and it actually came in the guise of a virus from Chinese chickens. The end result will be the same, a last few moments of torment for many people will be listening to some insufferable asshole saying "I told you so". Surely not a fate we should wish on anyone.

The hidden upside to this 2012 nonsense is that the people who really believe in this crap will spend all their money trying to survive whatever calamity they think is coming, end up in the streets, and freeze to death weeks before Dec. 21.

I'm pretty sure this is partially NASA'a response to the Killshot (http://www.disinfo.com/2011/11.... A possible scenario would be an electromagnetic blast that destroyed all the electronics on earth, but that would only be the end of our lifestyle, not the end of the world.
