Plato's description of Atlantis, as an island of concentric circles, in the two Socratic dialogues - Timaeus and Critias - 360 BCE, might be why Utopias are depicted as circular islands.

The Gate of Angkor Thom ("Great City"), Cambodia. Angkor Thom was Established in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII. It was abandoned some time prior to 1609, when an early western visitor wrote of an uninhabited city, "as fantastic as the Atlantis of Plato".

1) The Riccat Structure, "Eye of the Sahara" Some say this was Atlantis. I don't think I agree but it does match a lot of the details of Plato's description, including it's size.
