Officials have been scouring the Libyan capital for a suitable place to house the chairman of the National Transitional Council, Mustafa Abdul Jalil, who is expected to arrive in the capital at the weekend.Eventually, one member of the council said, they realised that despite its reputation as a Gaddafi haunt, the Rixos was the most sensible solution. The next-door conference centre could be used as a gathering and meeting place. The hotel itself could house members of the NTC not based in Tripoli. And one of a number of well-appointed Gaddafi regime villas dotted nearby could house Mr Abdul Jalil himself.
The Rixos was a five-star hotel that was part of a Turkish chain but believed to be co-owned by the Gaddafi family. Journalists were taken there from the minute they were allowed into the country to cover the regime's view of the uprising from the end of February.
