Mahmoud Jibril, the NTC interim Prime Minister, confirmed yesterday that they have discovered stockpiles of unregistered chemical weapons but that free Libya had no interest in keeping such materials.
“New Libya will be a peaceful Libya and that it is in our interest to have no weapons in Libya,” he told journalists. “There are international organizations taking care of this issue,” he added and representatives of those organizations are due to arrive in Libya later in the week.
Ian Martin, the UN Secretary General’s special envoy on Libya, had already expressed concern about the discovery of unprotected chemical weapon and hazardous nuclear material found by advancing NTC forces and Russia has drafted a UN resolution calling for the destruction of the Gaddafi era stockpiles.

Of more immediate concern in Libya are the vast numbers of weapons still in the hands of individuals and independent militias operating outside of any formal national command and control structure.
In Misrata alone there are more than 100 military groups, many of them now armed with tanks, rockets,heat seeking missiles and scud missiles and their launchers – all material captured from the retreating Gaddafi forces. Al Jazeera has a video report HERE:
