Starting at dawn on Saturday, NTC forces launched a major assault on Sirte from the east, west and south.
After several hours of intense fighting around Gaddafi’s palace complex and Green Square at the heart of Sirte, the NTC fighters took the Mauritanian Quarter, an area of large apartment blocks from which Gaddafi forces had rained down sniper fire.
