SECRETARY GENERAL RASMUSSEN VISITS LIBYA ON THE DAY NATO’S MISSION ENDS:
ACADEMIC LINKED WITH SAIF GADDAFI RESIGNS AHEAD OF DAMNING LSE REPORT:
SOME OF LIBYA’S WAR WOUNDED FEELING LEFT OUT AND UNCARED FOR:
TIMELINE – 1st November 2011 09.37 GMT:
Last night the NTC elected a new Prime Minister, Abdul Raheem al-Keib, in a public and democratic one-man-one-vote secret ballot.
Al-Keib received 26 of the 51 votes and is seen as a significant compromise candidate who can bring people together. An added bonus is that he has never worked for the Gaddafi regime.
As the NTC representative for Tripoli he will be able to calm the fears of citizens in the capital that the central government of Libya would shift its powerbase to Benghazi.
Seen as having a strong support base and being a popular choice, the new Prime Minister should be able to overcome objections to appointing key ministers to the portfolios for oil, finance, defence and internal security.
He is also seen as a quiet, friendly but strong individual who can convince armed fighters to give up their weapons and join a national police force and army.
