CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Officials at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte have made plans to move President Obama’s nomination acceptance speech from the 73,000 seat Bank of America Stadium, national and Charlotte media reported Tuesday.
The original plan was that Obama would speak “rain or shine” at the huge outdoor venue on Thursday evening, but different plans were announced after a torrential downpour and some lightning and thunder hit the CarolinaFest party on Monday afternoon.
That storm caused some delays and sent many folks scattering in the area. The thunder could be easily heard booming inside the convention hall, media reports said.
The reports of the planning for the much smaller Time Warner Arena – home of the Bobcats -- came after at least two media organizations reported that Democratic officials planned to bus in black people from South Carolina to help fill the massive Bank of America stadium.
The indoor arena would hold less than 20,000 people in its current configuration. For hockey games, the capacity is reduced to 14,100.
USA Today and The Associated Press both reported that black people would be bused into Charlotte – in the context of helping to fill the stadium.
“College students from across North Carolina and members of mostly black churches in South Carolina are expected to arrive for the stadium speech by the busload,” USA Today reported.
"We're confident that the stadium will be filled,'' Steve Kerrigan, CEO of the Democratic National Convention Committee, told USA Today.
Meanwhile the Associated Press also reported organized plans to send South Carolinians to the Obama speech.
“Lonnie Randolph, the president of the South Carolina chapter of the NAACP, said several large black churches in his state are planning to send busloads of members on Thursday to watch the president's speech,” the Associated Press reported.
It’s unclear exactly what would trigger a move inside to Time Warner Arena, but some press reports have said that lightning or severe downpours would possibly cause the move.
