US upgrades status of Libyan Embassy in Washington, opposition gets property, frozen assets
WASHINGTON — The State Department has signed off on papers that allow the Libyan Embassy in Washington to reopen under control of the opposition Transitional National Council and give staffers access to roughly $13 million in mission assets that had been frozen.
State Department officials said Tuesday that the council’s request to reopen the embassy had been reviewed and approved following the Obama administration’s decision last month to formally recognize the Benghazi-based group as Libya’s legitimate governing authority. Libya’s former ambassador to the United States, Ali Aujali, who resigned to protest Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi’s violent crackdown on opponents, is expected to serve as charge d’affaires.
