Residents of the besieged pro-Moamar Gaddafi town of Bani Walid, at least those who managed to get fuel for their cars, trickled steadily out of the area to safer place in Tripoli to escape the fighting which they feared was going to escalate from merely unacceptable to downright atrocious, abs-cbn news said.
Those getting out on Monday said food supply was dwindling and the support for Gaddafi was still strong partly because a lot of members of the Warfalla tribe, which Bani Walid was its stronghold, were closely linked to his rule.
They were hearing relentless pro-Gaddafi broadcasts saying, "Gaddafi propaganda radio said this morning that NATO will bomb the city today. That's why we are leaving. All the shops are closed. There's no food and very little fuel."
True to its propaganda, NATO planes conducted two air strikes on specific targets around town the National Transitional Council rebels were having difficulty in taking. Pro-Gaddafi rockets were falling on civilian houses destroying at least 25 in that last 24 hours.
The rebel council has different estimates about how long they would be able to gain control of the town but some of the fleeing residents said the dwindling supplies would prove ‘crucial to end the deadlock.’
The longer the standoff, the ‘harder the toll’ on the estimated 100,000 population of Bani Walid.
