Having advanced to within 1 kilometre of the very centre of Sirte on Saturday, NTC forces then retreated to the outskirts of the town to regroup, leaving their own snipers and checkpoints in place.
The tactical withdrawal, also allowed many more families to escape from the town, some of whom did not yet know that Tripoli had fallen to the NTC over a month ago.
However, while NATO took advantage of the withdrawal to heavily bomb Gaddafi’s positions on Sunday, the NTC fighters did not escape without paying a heavy price – 8 were reported dead and 160 wounded.
