Libya: NTC fighters suffer large casualties securing control of Sirte airport
Injured fighters loyal to Libya's National Transitional Council have been flown by helicopter to Benghazi for medical treatment.
In a fresh assault, NTC fighters have taken control of the airport in Sirte, one of the last remaining strongholds of forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi.
Dozens have been injured in the operation by pro-Gaddafi forces who have put up stiff resistance.
Libyan Red Crescent's helicopter has transported the seriously injured to Benghazi for life-saving treatment.
"We reached the military airport in Sirte, I left the vehicle at the back, and there was a fence already. The fence in front of us received firing, and I didn't know where it was coming from. One shot came into my right hand, another in my left hand underneath my armpit and another into my legs. Thank God, it's all good and okay," an injured fighter said.
NTC forces took Sirte airport two weeks ago only to be driven back.
