After a week of fierce fighting, with advances and retreats at Bani Walid and Sirte, Opposition forces have largely captured Sabha, Gaddafi’s southern desert stronghold and gateway to the loyalist escape route to Niger.
Having captured the airport and an army base at Sabha, the rest of the city of 100,000 is falling quickly as many within openly declare their allegiance to the NTC.
The road between Sabha and Sirte has also been cut, finally denying the Gaddafi troops still within Sirte a direct escape route to the south.
A 150 Gaddafi soldiers within Sabha are reported captured together with a chemical weapons store, while fighting continues against pockets of resistance in the al-Manshiya district.
