TIMELINE – 24th September 2011 UPDATED 12.33 GMT:
UPDATE 12.33 GMT: Reuters is reporting a major NTC advance into Sirte today, Saturday, from the south and west in addition to yesterday’s advance from the east.
NTC fighters have raced into Sirte this morning and massed in Zafran Square, just 1 kilometre from the town centre, but are coming under sustained sniper fire from high buildings.
Their rapid movement into the town was preceded by NATO strikes on an anti aircraft gun and an ammunition dump, leaving a huge plume  of black smoke hanging over the area.
Gaddafi’s troops put up no resistance and had earlier withdrawn to more central locations.
Yesterday, Friday, after days of stalemate, NTC forces moved 2 kilometres beyond the eastern gate of Sirte yesterday to take up new positions within the city boundaries.
