AFM commander Brigadier Martin Xuereb told a conference in Doha, Qatar that Malta is willing to support Libya in the implementation of proper border management practices, the establishment of a Libyan search and rescue capability that will allow Libya to respond to requests for assistance in her search and rescue region, and assist the Libyan Civil Aviation Authority in the management of Libyan airspace. During his intervention, Brigadier Martin Xuereb acknowledged Qatar’s leading role in supporting the Transitional National Council.
The conference was held for the Committee of Friends who Support Libya, aiming to determine the way forward in post-Gaddafi Libya. It was organised by Qatar on the express wishes of Mustafa Abdul Jalil, chairman of the Transitional National Council. Invited to attend the conference were the heads of defence of Malta, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Greece, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Canada and the United States of America. Malta was represented by a delegation from the AFM, led by Brigadier Xuereb.
During the conference Mr Jalil acknowledged the vital roles played by Nato, international actors and other states including Malta in assisting Libya gain victory over Gaddafi’s dictatorship.
Mr Jalil clearly defined priorities for the Transitional National Council, focusing on the need for assistance from the international community in assisting Libya in preventing the proliferation of weapons, providing oil sector security, conducting security sector reform, reintegrating former rebels into civil society, and implementing proper border management.
