BEIRUT: The Libyan authorities have designated the country’s Higher Security Committee to follow up on the disappearance of Imam Musa Sadr, the director general of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Haissam Joumaa said Friday.
The National News Agency reported that Jomaa had briefed Foreign Affairs Minister Adnan Mansour about his recent visit to Libya as part of the ministry's delegation to follow up on the case of Sadr, the influential Shiite leader who disappeared in 1978 while on a visit to Libya along with two companions.
The delegation traveled to Libya on Oct. 23, days after deposed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, who was indicted by Lebanon’s Judicial Council over the disappearance of Sadr, was captured and killed by rebels.
Jomaa was quoted as saying that the Libyan authorities were "determined to pursue the case to the fullest."
“The case is receiving serious follow up on a daily basis until the truth is revealed with the return of the Imam Sadr and his two companions,” the NNA was quoted Mansour as saying.
The relationship between Lebanon and Libya was severed under Gadhafi’s rule, but ties resumed after the National Transitional Council was formally recognized by Lebanon in late August. The two parties have vowed to improve ties between the two countries as well as resolve Sadr’s case.
