One part artist, one part business professional and one part circus ringmaster, an interior designer is more than just a pretty face with an eye for beauty. From sketching, designing and arranging beautiful spaces to shopping for furniture and household accessories, there’s no shortage of excitement in an interior design career. Interior designers must be able to manage people, budgets and client relationships - all while designing spaces that are attractive, functional, and meet building and safety codes.
The ability to work well with others is also a must. An interior designer communicates with clients to assess what they want and need in a space, and then present ideas for meeting those goals in a compelling way. The responsibilities also include coordinating with architects, electricians, plumbers and others to complete the job in a timely and cost-effective manner.
The main activities of the interior designer are:
• Plans, designs, and furnishes interior environments of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings: Confers with client to determine architectural preferences, purpose and function of environment, budget, types of construction,
equipment to be installed, and other factors which affect planning interior environments.
• Integrates findings with knowledge of interior design and formulates environmental plan to be practical, esthetic, and conducive to intended purposes, such as raising productivity, selling merchandise, or improving life style of occupants.
• Advises client on interior design factors, such as space planning, layout and utilization of furnishings and equipment, color schemes, and color coordination.
• Renders design ideas in form of paste ups, drawings, or illustrations, estimates material requirements and costs,
and presents design to client for approval.
• Selects or designs and purchases furnishings, art works, and accessories.
• Subcontracts fabrication, installation, and arrangement of carpeting, fixtures, accessories, draperies, paint and wall coverings, art work, furniture, and related items.
• Estimate material requirements and costs, and present design to client for approval.
• Confer with client to determine factors affecting planning interior environments, such as budget, architectural
preferences, and purpose and function.
• Advise client on interior design factors, such as space planning, layout and utilization of furnishings and equipment, and color coordination.
• Select or design, and purchase furnishings, art works, and accessories.
• Formulate environmental plan to be practical, esthetic, and conducive to intended purposes, such as raising productivity or selling merchandise.
• Subcontract fabrication, installation, and arrangement of carpeting, fixtures, accessories, draperies, paint and wall
coverings, art work, furniture, and related items.
• Render design ideas in form of paste-ups or drawings.
• Choose colors, furniture and materials to complement the design, as well as suit client's needs for function, durability and accessibility.
• Interior designers must have organizational skills and business know-how, as well as great taste and artistic ability.
• Responsible for keeping the project on budget and on schedule.
• Need to document your process and the products used, and manage contracts and negotiations on client’s behalf.
• Need a basic knowledge of building and safety codes to ensure that your design meets all necessary requirements
