NTC FREES HUNDREDS OF SUSPECTED GADDAFI FIGHTERS IN ADVANCE OF THE EID FESTIVAL:
PRO – GADDAFI “LIBERATION FRONT” THREATENS TO ASSASSINATE NTC LEADERS:
TIMELINE – 5th November 2011 08.42 GMT:
The NTC has released hundreds of suspected pro-Gaddafi fighters from prisons across the country in advance of the Eid religious festival which starts this weekend.
As news of the possible releases spread yesterday, relatives and friends of the detainees gathered infront of makeshift prisons and jails. By nightfall their wait was rewarded by hundreds of prisoners being set free. Tears and hugs of relief followed.
Some of them as young as 19 had only been involved in the war for a few days but got caught up as “Gaddafi fighters” as the NTC forces rapidly advanced.
Hundreds more suspected mercenaries, especially sub-Saharan Africans from Chad and Mali are not being released until the courts have processed their cases. The BBC has a video report of the prisoner release at Misrata HERE:
