Oil production has resumed in Libya with production hitting 531,230 barrels per day, according to the Libyan National Oil Company (NOC).

The NOC announcement has raised hopes of a quick revamping of the oil industry in the country after eight months of conflicts between the National Transitional Council (NTC) and forces loyal to Mouammar Kadhafi, who was killed in the process.

According to a report from the Mellita oil and gas company, charged with operating on behalf of the NOC, and the Italian company, ENI, operating under a production sharing agreement, production could reach 600,000 barrels per day by the end of the year.

The report said that at the Abu Tfeila well, located east of the country, production reached 52,000 barrels per day and forecasts indicated the figure could rise to 73,000 barrels per day in a few weeks time after some additional experimental tests were conducted at the well.

Work is ongoing for the resumption of production at the Al-Ramel well, which is capable of producing 15,000 barrels per day and the oil rig at the Al-ViI well, located in the basin of Morzouk, one of the largest oil fields, destroyed during the fighting.

The production capacity of the Al-Vil well reached about 130,000 barrels/day.

At the Al-Wafa well, located south of the city of Ghadames, on the border with Algeria, production was not interrupted during the upheavals in the country and it continued to supply different power and gas production plants with 450 million cubic feet/day of natural gas and 16,000 barrels of oil per day.

The oil and gas field also produced an estimated 17,000 barrels/day liquid gas (NGL).

On the on-shore platform, that of the Mellita’s complex, located in Sabratha (west of Tripoli), production will begin in early November, with an expected capacity of 950 million cubic feet of gas/day and 30,000 barrels oil/d.

The Al-Bouri well will also begin production estimated at 40,000 barrels of crude oil/day later in November.

With oil reserves of nearly 44 billion barrels, Libya was producing 1.7 million barrels/day before the eight-month war.
