Mr Nuri al-Abbar, the chairman of the HNEC said in a press conference that the total number of the polling stations, for security reasons, 101 polling stations had remained shut. From a total of 1554 stations due to have been opened for Saturday's historic election for 50 years, 1453 were able to open and are receiving voters.

Talking to journalists about five hours after the start of voting,Mr Abbar said it was mainly acts of sabotage that prevented some of the polling stations, most of them in the eastern part of the country to open. He confirmed however, that 94% of the polling stations were functional.

"Some of the polling stations were not opened. Because of security reasons, logistical materials haven't reached them," he said, adding that they were dealing with this. He said they had sent material to the polling stations so they could start voting.

E went on to say that the commission, is considering extending the deadline by four hours, from 8:00 pm to midnight in the voting centres that were affected affected.

He was very pleased with the turnout. “It was excellent despite the high temperatures," Mr al-Abbar said. He also confirmed that out-of-country voting in six different countries went smoothly and expats answered the call and cast their vote.

Voters claimed that polling at most stations, particularly in the west of the country has been brisk. At the small polling station, of Sogor Fida, in the district of Hay Andalus in Tripoli, two hours into voting, that is at 10 a.m., 11.13% of the 2,892 registered voters had already cast their vote. The expected percentage of the registered voters to have cast their vote by the end of the day here should be above 76%. Most expect that same percentage to cover all the voting in the country
