Mitt Romney edges President Obama nationally, according to a Fox News poll released Thursday.
A slew of new polling data released this week shows the presidential race in a dead-heat in the run-up to the Republican National Convention on Monday.

Both national daily tracking polls, Gallup and Rasmussen, show Obama and Romney to be tied. And while Romney leads Thursday’s Fox News poll by 1, Obama holds 1 point leads in the latest Associated Press and Survey USA polls.

Obama also leads by 1 percent according to the Real Clear Politics average of polls, the closest the average has been since mid-June.

On Aug. 9, Obama opened up one of his largest leads in months, according to the RCP average, at 4.5 percentage points. The race tightened almost immediately upon Romney’s Aug. 11 announcement that Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) would be his running mate.

The Fox News poll finds Romney with a strong lead among independent voters, 42 to 32 over Obama. Ten percent said they were undecided, and the undecided voters are not thrilled with either of the candidates — 55 percent said they disapproved of Obama’s job performance, while Romney is 28 percentage points underwater on likeability.

Obama still holds a slight advantage over Romney in most of the 12 swing-states that will be critical in determining the outcome of the 2012 election.

The Fox News poll of 1,0007 likely voters was conducted Aug. 19-21 and has a 3 percentage point margin of error.
