CARACAS, Venezuela - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says he will evaluate a proposal to join in a team of non-aligned nations to solve the crisis in Syria.
Chavez has remained a vocal supporter of Syrian leader Bashar Assad, who has been widely criticized for using Syria's military to fight a popular uprising in which thousands have been killed.
Chavez said Tuesday that he will look at the proposal by Iran late last month to form a group with other non-aligned countries like Venezuela, Egypt, Lebanon and Iraq that would try to achieve peace in Syria.
The Venezuelan leader has accused the U.S. government and its allies of provoking violence in Syria in an effort to topple Assad's government.
Venezuela's government says the conflict in Syria should be resolved peacefully without foreign intervention.
