The Damage Done: Hurricanes in New York’s History

It has happened before. Streets have flooded; ships have been lost; beaches have been swept away. Dozens of hurricanes and tropical storms have affected the region since record-keeping began, with the city itself recording more close calls than direct hits.
One of the worst storms, known as the Long Island Express, hit in September 1938. It brought wind gusts of 125 m.p.h. and killed scores of people in New York State and hundreds more as it passed through New England.
