Soldiers and officials along a stretch of Japan's northeastern coast warned residents that the area could be hit by another tsunami Monday and ordered them to higher ground.
However, a few hours later the Meteorological Agency said there was no risk of another deadly wave.
Sirens around the town of Soma went off late Monday morning and public address systems ordered residents to higher ground.
Kyodo News Agency had reported the tsunami could be three metres high, citing Fukushima prefectural officials.
The area was hit by a massive 9.0-magnitude quake and initial tsunami on Friday afternoon.
