Misurata port filled with desperate migrants trying to flee. Libya

Good read “@: Dictators never learn.

2A CIVIL war is currently raging in Libya. Unless one of the belligerent sides capitulates, the civil war may go on for many more weeks or months to come. At this stage it is difficult to tell the final outcome of the conflict. Whichever way it goes, one thing is clear;  Libya will never be the same again. Muammar Gaddafi’s dream of a unique Libyan style of “democracy” where decisions and actions are taken by “People’s Committees” is probably in ruins, never to be resurrected. A ruler who has been in control for four decades has suddenly been confronted by his people demanding radical and immediate change. In typical dictatorial mode, the ruler says no change is possible, let alone acceptable, unless initiated and approved by “People’s Committees”. Over the last four decades, Libyans have of course learnt whose voice carries the day in the decisions and actions of the “People’s Committees”. So this time they would have none of it. Therein is the main source of the ongoing brutal conflict.

NY Times Chris Chivers reporting from Misurata port filled with desperate migrants trying to flee.

MISURATA, Libya — A passenger vessel chartered by an international aid organization entered the port of this beleaguered city Thursday afternoon, pressing on in spite of a barrage of heavy artillery or rockets with the mission of rescuing migrant workers stranded by the Libyan war.The vessel, the Ionian Spirit, arrived after a nearly 19-hour passage from Benghazi, the rebel capital in easternLibya, to a city reduced to nearly desperate conditions. Libya’s third largest city, Misurata has been besieged since February, largely isolated from the world by forces loyal to Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi. Front-lines cross through several of its neighborhoods. Artillery or rocket batteries fire their munitions into the neighborhoods. Electricity is mostly cut off.
