7:30pm: Gaddafi has sworn to assassinate Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Corriere della Sera reported on Saturday. According to the newspaper, Berlusconi learned of the assassination plot through “reliable sources,” though the prime minister did not elaborate which sources. Berlusconi said Gaddafi was not referring to his “political death,” but to his physical death, the paper added. “Because that’s what he [Gaddafi] decided, he swore to this himself,” Berlusconi was quoted as saying.
7:00pm: Opposition have encircled Gaddafi’s last stronghold in Libya’s Western Mountain region and hope to seize it soon, a commander said on Saturday. Opposition tanks fired at Tiji, where an estimated 500 government troops are stationed, and the blasts could be heard from nearby Hawamid, a town 200 kms (124 miles) southwest of Tripoli, which was captured on Thursday in a new offensive against the army.
6:50pm: Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s regime has taunted Britain over the death of rebel commander General Abdel Fattah Younes.Government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim told reporters:
“It is a nice slap to the face of the British that the council that they recognised could not protect its own commander of the army. By this act, al Qaeda wanted to mark out its presence and its influence in this region. The other members of the National Transitional Council knew about it but could not react because they are terrified of al Qaeda.”
