After spending over 100 days patrolling off the Libyan coast the Type 42 Destroyer, HMS Liverpool, has been instrumental in supporting the NATO led Operation UNIFIEDPROTECTOR.
As part of her duties HMS Liverpool
escorted the Libyan Frigate, Al Hani, into Tripoli harbour on 31st August 2011. Flying the flags of ‘Free Libya’ the Al Hani’s upper deck was lined with soldier’s eager to join their comrades in the city.

HMS Liverpool’s Commanding Officer, Commander Colin Williams, said:
“As the Al Hani became visible on the horizon it was clear that not only her ship’s company were on board – the upper deck was crowded.
“The arrival of the Al Hani is a significant milestone in the rebel campaign – to take a former Gaddafi warship into the capital, until very recently held by Gaddafi, shows the extent of the achievement by the Libyan people.
“This is one of the first steps to the establishment of a stable and secure country, free from the Gaddafi regime.”
The Al Hani is the only remaining serviceable Libyan naval vessel. The ship was seized by the rebels in the opening phase of the civil war whereas her sister ship, Al Ghardabia, was severely damaged by an RAFbombing raid while the vessel was ‘tied-up’ in Tripoli harbour.
