After making rapid advances into Sirte yesterday, clearing Gaddafi held checkpoints as they went, NTC forces have regrouped overnight and are ready to make a further assault on the centre of the town today, Sunday.
Having waited on the outskirts of the town for weeks for residents to flee, NTC fighters were frustrated while endeavouring to save a lot of civilian lives.
In the last week an estimated 1300 families have left the city and according to their accounts, many of those remaining are clustered in basements with little food and no running water.
Many of the children have diarrhoea having drunk water from suspect sources.
This information was what finally made the decision to attack yesterday, especially as many of the families still trapped in the city are, like the bulk of the fighters, from Misrata.
Reports that they were being prevented from leaving by Gaddafi forces and subject to reprisals, also added to the tipping point. --more...
