AJELive: NTC member:investigation needed as to how  ended up dead after being captured alive| Latest on ...

A member of Libya’s ruling National Transtitional Council (NTC) has voiced doubts over the exact circumstances of Muammar Gaddafi's death, raising questions over earlier claims that the deposed leader had been killed in a crossfire.
Waheed Burshan told Al Jazeera on Saturday that Gaddafi was clearly captured alive and there should be an investigation as to how he ended up dead a short while later.
“We found that he was alive and then he was dead. And as far as we can tell there was no fight. Was there a fight when transporting him to Misrata? We don’t know. But there was definitely a time gap and I am sure an investigation will happen.”
Reuters - Libyan forces guarding Muammar Gaddafi's body in a cold storage room on Saturday let in members of the public to view the deposed leader for a second day, but the wounds that may hold the clue to how he died were covered up.
Gaddafi's body lay on a mattress on the floor of the cold room, as it did on Friday when hundreds of members of the public filed in to see for themselves that the man who ruled Libya for 42 years was really dead.
But unlike the previous day, Gaddafi's body was covered by a blanket that left only his head exposed, hiding the bruises on his torso and scratch marks on his chest that had earlier been visible.
And, crucially, a Reuters reporter who viewed the body said, Gaddafi's head had been turned to the left. That meant a bullet hole that earlier could be seen on the left side of his face, just in front of his ear, could no longer be seen.
Guards overseeing Gaddafi's body handed out green surgical masks to dozens of people filing in to take a look because of the stench of rotting flesh filling the room.

Gaddafi's extended family has asked for his body those of his son Mutassim and other close associates to be given to them so that they may perform a proper Islamic burial.
"We call on the UN, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference and Amnesty International to force the [National] Transitional Council to hand over the martyrs' bodies to our tribe in Sirte and to allow them to perform their burial ceremony in accordance with Islamic customs and rules," the family said in a statement released on the Syria-based pro-Gaddafi al-Rai television station.
NATO's top commander says he will recommend the end of operations in Libya after its part on Muammar Gaddafi's ouster.

Member countries are considering the next step after Gaddafi's death amid talks of some members not playing their part and putting the relevance of the bloc into question.

Al Jazeera's Barnaby Philips has more.
NATO plans to end its seven-month air and sea mission in Libya on October 31, NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Friday.

In this video, he explains NATO's intentions behind the decision.

Libya's National Transitional Council has said it would declare the full "liberation" of Libya on Sunday, after initially saying it would take place on Friday, then on Saturday.
"It will be on Sunday afternoon at around 14:00 GMT."
NTC information minister Mahmoud Shammam told reporters. "It will be a public announcement, I think in the main square of Benghazi by (NTC chairman) Mustafa Abdel Jalil."
The announcement is to mark what the NTC says will be the beginning of the process of building a democratic system in Libya.

Conflicting news were reported from Libya about the fate of Gaddafi’s son, Saif al-Islam, the purported heir apparent for his father, following Gaddafi’s death on Thursday.
Uncertain reports have said Saifal Islam was injured after his attempt to flee Sirte heading for Zlaitin. Meanwhile, deputy head for the NTC higher security committee in Tripoli has said Gaddafi was shot dead by gunfire on Thursday and that he would be buried in an honourable manner, as based on Islamic Sharia law.
But AJA correspondent said when asked about the presence of Saifal Islam in Zlaitin, the local authorities there have denied possessing any information about Saifal Islam, saying the reports  were baseless and those who had released  the rumours would questioned.
Other news reports have also said a convoy of about 10 vehicles which was tracked south of Sirte town, was believed to be carrying  Saifal Islam and Sanousi, Gaddafi’s intelligence chief, while heading for Niger.
For its part, the Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) which had earlier issued an arrest warrant for Gaddafi, has asked NTC authorities to postpone the burial of Gaddafi’s corpse, till the ICC undertakes necessary tests on the body, AJA correspondent says.
Meanwhile, the dead body have been set to be seen by NTC head who will be heading for Misrata on Friday, along with other Libyans before the burial, AJA correspondent says.
The UN High Commission for Human Rights has called for investigating the circumstances of Gaddafi’s death, while NATO said they were unaware about the presence of colonel Gaddafi in the convoy of vehicles bombarded by NATO on Thursday near Sirte .
Press sources have meanwhile quoted Niger authorities as saying Abdullah al-Sanousi, Gaddafi’s intelligence chief, had fled Sirte battle zone heading for northern Niger.

Libya's National Transitional Council has delayed the burial for Muammar Gaddafi in order to arrange a secret location and allow for an investigation into his death, officials say.
On Friday, as videos continued to surface showing the fugitive deposed leader being captured alive by a crowd of NTC fighters, the United Nations' human rights office called for an investigation into how he died.
Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley reporting from the location of incident, recounts the moments that lead to his capture.

As I look on the death photos of a man that has been a presence in my life for a majority of my years, I can not help but feel a sadness. This man could have been a man of destiny, a man of peace, a beloved leader of the people of Libya,  but instead he chose to walk the road of terror and mass murder.

To the Libyan people, I know there is grief and happiness across your beautiful land. May Allah guide you as you set up your new government and may peace without terror reside in your homes and land. Let the healing begin now. It is easy to hate one old enemy but with the blessing of Allah you can move on without hate in your heart.

I am proud of Libyans. I know them best as I lived there for last 20 years. They are very special people-good, inteligent, talented, respectful, easy they learn anything, hard working, open minded, correct. But the world did not know this. Because of the regime they were called terrorists, they had no the chance to express their talents, to communicate, to be modern, to enjoy the life, to sing or dance.

The world was amazed how brave they were. They did something no one other nation could do. In 21st century when the wepons are so perfect, when the people are so material and their spirit is so low, they showed that they are not afraid to meet the bullets dressed in T-shirts, they showed so high spirit, they devoted their lives to the others, to Libya, to Freedom. They achieved everything with their braviness, determination and faith. Nothing stopped them-nither the snipers, the automat guns, the rockets, nor the bad weather.

PLEASE TAKE MY DEEP BOW THOUSANDS KNOWN AND UNKNOWN LIBYAN SOLDIERS OF FREEDOM.

May this ending be the kick-off party for your true beginning!

I always knew this day would come. True of heart, the Freedom Fighters would Succeed.

    !!!CELEBRATING with you!!!
  • Congrats to the Libyan people. You have risen up against tyranny and won your own freedom.
  • Gaddafi Obituary: He called himself the "King of Kings". He put his sons and relatives in charge of all important ministries and ruled with an iron fist for 42 years. He raped students at university and publicly hanged political opponents. When his people protested against him, he called them rats and turned the weapons of war against them. He was found hiding in a drain pipe and shot dead by his own people. Moral: power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

We didn't support the revolution against Gaddafi, to have a new regime that continues in his style of killing and mistreating prisoners.

The NTC asked the whole world for recognition, and in doing that, the NTC promised to lead Libya to democracy and respect for human rights. They are now being held up to those promises, and the whole world watches.

Human rights are easy if its somebody you like, that is getting mistreated.
The hard test is when it is the human rights of those you don't like. I hope the NTC and the new Libya is mature enough to realise that human rights needs to be for all, to have any real protective effect.

Killing a prisoner in cold blood should never be accepted, no matter who that prisoner is.

Let me explain it to you in pictures.
    There is a kindergarden.
    The children are inside.
80 mothers of these children are with scythes in the backyard garden for a voluntarily work input.
You decide to go in there and to kill the children.
How do you call the occurrence which happens to you?

    Arbitrary execution without any trial,
    or suicide?

After all the 1000s of dead Libyans,
after all these uncounted injured Libyans,
    after all these raped women,
after all these impertinent and inhuman speeches in Libyan State TV which heated the rebels up,
I was wondering that his body is still ONE piece...

    Call it what you want,
if you walk through Harlem, shouting the "N"-word again and again -
    I call it suicide...

And for the Anti-NATO, Anti-Bosnia, Anti-Kosovo Milosovic Youth here in the blog:
    Stop whimpering and drooling.
The dream of a Great Serbia is over.
Milosovic is dead and Bosnia and Kosovo will be free states.
    It's over.

The half of my state is polish today.
    And? I don't care.
Because we are both part of the European Community...
    Добродошли на 2011!
  • It's very difficult to feel the pains of others but you can only share in a little way, Some people forgetting how many people died in the struggle for Libyans to be freed. and they said the way Gaddafi died doesn't worth it! The war in Libya is avoidable but instead he chooses the hard way. I think his BLOOD will wash the whole of the land of Libya Clean!!.

unknownfire:  Where did you get those numbers? Where where they actually implemented? In Sirte? In the Abu Salim district?

Obviously, the Libyan majority where highly dis-satisfied with the situation. Millions risked their lives, tens of thousands fought and thousands where martyred to get rid of him.

    Libya has a huge oil reserve, giving billions of annual incomes. Not Gadaffis oil, but the Libyan countries, the Libyan people's! Anything he created he did with money stolen from its rightful owners. Despite that and despite your numbers. Here are some other numbers;

    - 40% of the population was unemployed and lived in poverty
    - Libya was frequently listed as one of the 10 worst countries in the world on human rights issues
    - Libya was frequently listed as one of the 10 worst countries in the world on corruption
    - Tens of thousands of opponents died during his rule
    - Gadaffi got Libya involved in a dozen wars and armed conflicts
    - The infrastructure was falling apart
    - Large parts of the country wher totally neglected

Why was the economy so poor, despite it "should" be one of the richest countries in the world?
    - Because of the corruption, starting right at the top
    - Because of bad management- Gadaffi said he was a simple and poor man with a very modest income from the state. So how did he and his family have a billion dollar annual private spending? By corruption!
    - Because of a number of crazy projects
    - Because of huge military spending in Libya and in other countries
