Dwight Howard Rumors: Where Things Are Yesterday, now 4 Team deal?
Geoff Burke-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire
Dwight is as unsure about his next destination as he is on whether he should clap here.
Inspired from a Twitter conversation yesterday, here now how I understand the Dwight Howard situation to be and the Hawks place in that conversation.
First of all, though we discussed this last season, it's a fine place the Hawks are in that they have the financial flexibility to make this happen either through trade this year or free agency the next. Bravo.
Now, as I understand it through the many, many outlets like Orlando Pinstriped Post that are covering the Howard situation, this is what we "know" right now about Dwight Howard and the Magic:
- Dwight Howard wants to be a Brooklyn Net.
- Dwight Howard does not want to sign a long-term contract with Orlando.
- Orlando is not pleased with the reported Nets offer of Kris Humphries, Marshon Brooks, Brook Lopez and three future first round picks.
- Orlando is in no hurry to deal, but they also can't see starting next season without this being resolved.
- The Los Angeles Lakers are willing to trade Andrew Bynum in a deal for Howard, but want Howard to sign an extension if they do so.
- Howard has not been willing to sign an extension with the Lakers.
- The Houston Rockets are willing to take their chances, acquire Howard's Bird rights and deal all their draft picks from this year's draft in a package for Howard, with no guarantee of a long term contract from Howard.
- Orlando has not been interested, yet, in the Rockets offer.
- Dallas and Atlanta have been the most aggressive in trying to deal for Howard as of yesterday, but want the same guarantees as the Lakers in terms of a long term commitment from Howard, which he hasn't said he will do.
- If the Hawks have to make a trade for Howard, versus waiting until next offseason to go after him, they would have to include Al Horford in any deal and Orlando is interested in multiple future draft picks included in any deal for Howard.
So, based on "knowing" these things and where they are today, this is what has to happen to gain an outcome before the season starts.
- Dwight either has to give up the dream of going to the Nets and sign with Los Angeles, Dallas or Atlanta.
- Orlando resigns itself to trade with Houston since Dwight is determined not to sign any extension with anybody.
- Orlando resigns itself to a deal with the Nets.
The 'do-nothing' approach has been discussed about the Magic, but just letting Dwight walk means turning away from draft picks, young players or both -- items you have to think Orlando would have to be interested in as they regroup for life after Howard.
Exit Question: Where do you put the chances, percentage wise, Atlanta has in getting Howard?
why would we do a sign and trade if he hits FA
We’d have enough cap space so we wouldn’t have to do it
Im assuming Dwight would like to get the most money with his bird rights
and Houston would be willing to recoup some draft picks in this scenario
Honestly
Probably 10-20 percent considering his desire to go to Brooklyn (why?) LA’s desire to win now and Houston’s willingness to take him without an extension.
Co-sign
I have doubts that this will ultimately work. Ferry should not (and probably will not) make a trade unless he is sure that DH wants to be here and is willing to put his signature on a piece of paper.
Ferry’s hire is predicated on “building it the right way.” Cashing in valuable assets for a guy who will leave after one year is not the way to get the mission accomplished.
Back up plan?
if we dont get Howard, whats the Hawks back up plan? will Josh sign an extension if Howard is not here?
cmon Ferry, make this happen now. . .
If I knew Dwight would sign without Josh
I would much rather trade Josh and picks than Horford and picks.
Horford better in pick and roll, does more little things offensively, hits that 16 footer that spreads the floor and maybe most importantly, is locked up for cheaper than Josh will be after next season.
I second the opinion on keeping Al

HEY RAY EDWARDS!!!!!!!!!!
oh nevermind

so how long are you going to keep the duck butt pic?

Rashard Lewis and Anthony Randolph
is Lewis really a priority or just another piece to spread the floor if we somehow got Howard?
Randolph in the meantime kinda looks good with Josh and AL together on the floor.
It kind of scares me that we've been the most aggressive in a Howard trade.
Teague, Horford, and Zaza for Dwight? Takes you right out of the playoffs. This is weird.
Wait him out. I feel Teague is about to be a breakout star if you play him as the sole PG with a big frontcourt. The center sets a screen and its Teague vs a backpedaling center.
I want to wait Howard out. My backup plan would be depth, depth, depth. No matter what that makes Samuel Dalembert a priority.
And regardless, the Hawks have to play Teague with , Josh Smith , Horford, and Pachulia all at the same time. Jenkins and Morrow as well, you have to see how well they operate off screens and if they can win games in a slow methodical pace.
Cue Larry Drew making a run for the thorazine.
* Josh Smith = Andre Iguodala *
If Josh can assure as of Howard then wait out...
Let Josh sign an extention, sign Anthony Randolph as a “project”, sign a back up C (Dalembert?) then we can roll this season and wait for Howard next year…
we can really have a BIG3 of Josh, Al, and Dwight. Dwight alone can bring the crowd to highlight factory also.
a front court of Al, Josh, Dwight would be the best defensive frontcourt in NBA
then we could have zaza and ivan coming off the bench………………… the only way to beat us would be with the guard play

Essentially
We’d be the Knicks with better defenders. Melo/Amare/Tyson but no guard play. I’d rather have Josh/Al/Dwight and Teague/Jenkins/whoever else, I think we could really compete then.
In Danny Ferry I trust.
I hate my profile name.
Teague
if Teague continues to grow then the more chances we can really compete. Who knows he might turn up to be an All-Star caliber PG next season.
I really like Teague
Great athleticism, nothing stopping him from taking it to the next level. Imagine if he gets to play alongside Al, Josh and Dwight…he’ll just need to feed lobs in transition and penetrate in the halfcourt.
In Danny Ferry I trust.
I hate my profile name.
Exactly my thoughts plus he wont have joe around to steal the ball from him
we saw how he did in the playoffs.

Best case scenario
Wouldn’t it be the most helpful for Dwight to be traded to the rockets or not traded at all and then enter free agency? We might not be a lock to get him, but we do pay him less money and we will be one of the more cap flexible teams at that point.
if he's traded to the rockets, that brings up the chances of them making it to the playoffs and we get their pick

What I dont understand is why he wouldnt want to come here.
I mean I hope he does realize if he comes here via free agency, then atl will probably have the best front court in the nba

That depends on if Dwight is thinking about money and endorsements
or a place where a championship will most likely happen…..or in the Lakers case, both.
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
This is Dwight howard
im sure endorsements will be there for him if he were to come here. If anything this will make atlanta more popular around the league and all the “unsure” fans in atlanta will suddenly become hawks fans

Plus
I want to see what Ferry does in the off-season regarding coaching. If we can keep teague and josh while getting a good coach, then I like our chances even more

Everyone wants a long term deal from Dwight
So everyone should let Houston get him and let him decide where he wants to go next season. This is almost like Lebron’s final year, but everyone knew the Cavs weren’t going to trade him.
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
I put the chances at less than 10% this season
No reason to mortgage the future until he commits to us. I say wait until free agency, Dwight can’t sign with the Nets unless it’s a sign and trade, doesn’t really want to go to Houston, Dallas or LA so I hope Josh Smith call talk to him for the next season and convince him to come home. Then we hand out extensions to Josh and Teague and look to build around them, Dwight and Horford. (Best case scenario). I see about a 25% chance of that storyiine playing out

This is exactly my thoughts
unless he wants to commit to us, we REALLY need to push for him in FA

I think our chances are "0"...
1)To give up Teague and Horford for a player who could leave the next year, after giving away Joe, would be crazy. Ferry would be run out of town after his 1st year.
2) Giving up Teague and Al would gut our talent and make the Hawks the worse team he could sign with.
3) He would sign with the Nets for the Midlevel, the the following get his “Bird Rights”.. He has an owner willing to pay HUGE in LUX TAX… That isn’t the Hawks.
4) The Nets/Lakers have better would be closer to Championship teams.
Dwight would never settle for the midlevel
He and all the other superstars want to get paid up front.
In Danny Ferry I trust.
I hate my profile name.
especially coming off of back surgery
Nobody of his talents is just going to give up money for a season
He could do what Danny Manning did to the Hawks...
sign that 1 year deal… If he think his back is fine.
I really an curious to see what will happen with our coaching situation
and if getting a good coach will help his decision……………okay so what I mean is stay away from SVG

hopefully 0%
Until Howard shows any indication of being willing to sign an extension or free agent contract in Atlanta, Ferry would be crazy to trade for him.
Are we really sure he wants to play with Josh...
He watched how josh played in the HISTORIC BLOW OUT… I have friends I would never want to work with.
Was it really josh's fault for that?
or is it that our idiot former coach insisted we double team dwight on every possession.

I would have done Howard for Horford last year
