A new poll released Wednesday by the Race Fans 4 Freedom organization indicates NASCAR fans are more unhappy with the direction of the country than other voters and prefer Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney over President Barack Obama by a wide margin.
The survey, conducted by the Republican-leaning Tarrance Group, found 68 percent of NASCAR fans are likely voters believe the country is on the wrong track, while only 54 percent of the general population believes that's the case.
Romney is preferred by 63 percent of NASCAR fans, while only 34 percent said they prefer Obama (58 percent of the voters surveyed said they are Republicans). Obama has a one-point lead over Romney (49-48) with the general population, the poll found.
The findings of the Race Fans 4 Freedom survey are in direct contrast to the results of a Sept. 23 poll by Zogby, which found NASCAR fans preferred Obama over Romney by a 48-41 margin.
Of the likely voters surveyed in the Race Fans 4 Freedom poll, 18 percent said they follow NASCAR "very closely" or "somewhat closely." That group's top priority is the economy (27 percent), which is similar to the general population.
The poll was conducted by phone with 1,022 registered likely voters nationwide from Oct. 1-4 and has a margin of error of 3.1 percent.
