Gaddafi forces pushed back from key Libyan city
Last Updated:
Rebel fighters in Libya have had a morale boosting victory, pushing pro Gaddafi forces back from the edge of the city of Ajdabiya.
For eight days, the opposition forces have been trying to break the siege of Ajdabiya.
The city lies on the front line between the two sides, and would have given the Libyan army a clear road to the opposition capital, Benghazi.
After repeated assaults - and with a lot of help from allied air strikes - they've finally pushed the Gaddafi forces back.
Our reporter Ben Knight says the signs of fierce fighting are all through the city, which bears the marks of shelling and missile fire.
As news spread, thousands of people streamed into the city, bringing with them food and water - but mostly, to celebrate.
The fighters themselves say they will now push on towards Tripoli - but the long battle for Ajdabiya has shown just how difficult a task that will be.
