Some of his longest serving acolytes have been brushed aside and subsequently looked to bail out from regime. His eight sons have overseen a brutal and ruthless response to the popular uprising.
Defectors:
Moussa Koussa.
The foreign minister became the highest ranking defector to flee from Tripoli since the imposition of UN sanctions. Mr Koussa has overseen Libya's involvement in worldwide terrorist campaigns before emerging as Col Gaddafi's point man as the government sought international rehabilitation.
