In the UK’s quest to lead the way in all things ridiculous, we have now given our support or rather recognition to the rebels as the legitimate representation of the people in Libya. The Government also threw in for good measure the expulsion of Libyan diplomats from the UK. Ok lets be fair, the Americans have recently recognised the National Transition Council in Libya as basically “pucker” but naturally if America buy into stupidity, you can bet your bottom dollar that the poodle UK will be hot on their behind (metaphorically speaking).
Naturally the Gaddafi cohorts are up in arms (literally and metaphorically!) over Britain’s decision but I don’t think they need concern themselves with further support for the UK since the rest of the world have common sense.
I personally do not agree with Western involvement in Arab affairs, especially when it’s cloaked under the guise of humanitarianism. The West was notably unconcerned when the rebels were rapidly advancing toward Tripoli to depose Gaddafi earlier this year. Call me cynical, but it was shortly after the one time Justice Minister turned Rebel with a cause, Mustafa Abdel Jalil, warned “Countries that have failed to support the uprising against Muammar Gaddafi would be denied access to Libya's vast oil riches if the regime is deposed." that Britain and France swung into action for humanitarian reasons “only”! Italy begrudgingly let us use their air bases and as Germany’s Angela Dorothea put it “wir woollen nichts davon” (‘we want none of it”). I was surprised that the normally passive French were pressing for action. I thought a piece of the Eiffel Tower must have fallen on Sarkozy’s head, until I read that France obtains most of its oil from Libya.
The urgency for regime change is high because if Gaddafi retains power then finding a reason to lift sanctions would be difficult and embarrassing. There is also the spectre of helping out other strife ridden Arab countries like Bahrain and Yemen?? Oh hang on, they don’t have much oil. “Yes absolutely, the West mustn’t be seen to be over involved in Arab affairs!” The excuses will be interesting!
The war in Afghanistan and now Libya have highlighted one major fact..the Arabs are tremendous fighters, many times better than the Western powers. If you read about the massive barrages of artillery, bombing, sheer numbers of troops and the devastating air power mercilessly thrown at them, they are still there and showing no signs of losing! Far from being the rag tag, malnourished, impoverished and reluctant Army as thought, they have shown themselves to be highly organised, hugely cunning and extremely resistant..in short we can’t beat them!
Now that we have come out in official support and recognition of the rebels as the legitimate body, lets hope this newly ‘elected’ body doesn’t do as our politicians do on attaining power, that is anything other than what the people voted them in for. The ramifications would be disastrous!
