Syria faces Arab League deadline as 17 people are reported killed

Damascus and the Arab League are said to be haggling over an observer mission for Syria, where rights groups say security forces have responded brutally to the largely peaceful protests. Opposition activists said Syrian security forces killed at least 17 people Friday as President Bashar Assad's government faced an Arab League deadline of Saturday for implementing a faltering peace plan.
