TEHRAN — Iran banned its citizens on Friday from travelling to Syria by road following the abduction of nearly 30 Iranians in the escalating uprising in its key Middle East ally, state media reported. This debate in the US about whether to attack Syria or not is disturbing. Too many planners in the Pentagon are still thinking in terms of destroying the Vietnamese village to save it. I haven't spent tons of time in Syria but I have been to Damascus and Aleppo and love the country. I have found nothing but charming, hospitable, friendly people. Too few in DC think about the death and destruction to the common people that will come from a US attack on Syria. All in the name of freedom? Saving the Syrians from Bashar al Assad? If the US wants to attack Syria, at least have the honesty to say you don't give a rats ass about the Syrian people and just want to destroy the country to weaken Iran's power.
We need to set a better standard for humanitarian intervention.

Dagmar Diwok  -  That is what I think too.. the last time I was in Syria (Damascus and Homs) exactly one year ago, the revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia were already in full swing, but people in Syria didn´t seem to me so ready to throw themselves into this kind of venture. I remember sitting with female Syrian colleagues sitting in a cafe in Damascus, chatting freely, about the political situation, and the only thing they were afraid of were Islamists strumentalizing the "Arabian Spring", certainly not Bashar. I still cannot believe what is happening there now.

Split over Syria: Russia holds war hawks to letter of law
Russia's Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said an embargo on arms supplies to Syria is out of the question -- along with any resolution that could threaten to aggravate conflict in the country.

That is the crux of the issue. Legitimate opposition groups don't fight the army of the state. Legitimate opposition groups don't blow up oil pipelines, they don't threaten the president that they'll kill both him and his family. All of those things are what they call treason in their own English language!

Robert Fisk: Syria is used to the slings and arrows of friends and enemies
Bashar al-Assad is clinging to power despite the slow growth of a civil war. But if the regime should survive, what sort of country will it rule?
ROBERT FISK

The violence grows worse. The Arab League throws up its hands in despair. Madame Clinton may huff and puff at the United Nations. But the Syrian regime and the stalwarts...

Reassured of their role in the new Syria, the country's Alawite and Christian populations, two of the communities that the current regime depends on for bedrock support, would have an incentive to participate peacefully in the post-Assad order. Of course, such a scenario appeals to US and ...

When Hillary Clinton arrived at the United Nations this week, to discuss the Arab League's peace plan for Syria, she came off looking just a little sinister.
