It was an amazing sight as we approached this area and saw this temple from the plane. In the comments, Alex also mentions that this entire site had to me moved in the 1960s when the Aswan Dam was built across the Nile River. It would flood the temple and leave it sitting at the bottom of Lake Nassar. So the temple was moved and reconstructed down to the smallest detail, even so that the light enters the temple and lights up the far chambers on the correct day and time. It was a fabulous and unforgettable trip!

We started our trip in Cairo, then flew South to Abu Simbel and Aswan, saving the pyramids for the end of our trip, so Abu Simbel was the first of the great temples and monuments we saw. I knew it would be impressive, but I was completely blown away by how huge it was, and that we had such a great view from the plane flying into the local airport.
