"Contrary to a fabricated story that ran this morning on a small music web site in Australia, drummer Charlie Watts has not left The Rolling Stones", said band publicity spokeswoman, Fran Curtis

.

The rumors all started this morning when Australian music site, Undercover, stirred up a worldwide panic among fans, since Watts' departure would most likely signal the end of almost 40 years of music.

The Undercover report, quoted "a source within the Stones inner-circle" that said, "Watts will never record or tour with the band again." It further stated that the Stones were set to replace him with New York session drummer Charlie Drayton, who has played on solo projects with Stones guitarist Keith Richards in the past.

Every journalist in the world has been going crazy trying to verify all of these "insiders" and then the mystery "spokeswoman". I spoke with Mike Kappus, Charlie Watts' Manager in the U.S. for his jazz band this afternoon and he stated, "As far as I know, Charlie is NOT leaving the Rolling Stones. I believe he will be issuing a personal statement as well at some point regarding the erroneous reporting of his departure from the band."

This afternoon, the original report came from undercover.com, and though false, soon appeared on NME.com (and their UK sister company, uncut.co.uk. Both sites referenced that a "band spokeswoman" had issued a statement disputing the rumors.

In an email I received from Allan Jones, Editor of the UK publications, he verified that the official statement was sent to him directly from LD Communications, who handles all PR for The Rolling Stones in the UK. I have emailed LD Communications for a direct quote and to verify that Fran Curtis had the authority to issue such a statement.

As a huge Rolling Stones fan, no one is happier than me that this just turned out to be a rumor. As a journalist, it makes me mad - this is just Journalism 101 stuff!
