- Syrian Jet Bursts Into Flames Over Deir al-ZourUpdated August 13Rebels Claim to Bring Down Plane; Government Blames 'Technical Failure'A jet flying over the eastern region of Deir al-Zour burst into flames after a hail of heavy rebel gunfire. A pair of videos posted on Monday showed flames spewing from the fighter jet, which rebels described as a Russian-made MIG, and immediately prompted sharply different accounts from the Syrian government, which blamed a "technical failure," and rebels, who said it had been downed by their gunfire. Shortly after, rebels posted video that they said showed the pilot, who had ejected.Al MuhassanAt least two cameras captured angles on the jet explosion. "A MIG was hit," one rebel yelled, giving the location as Al Muhassan, near Deir al-Zour City. Hassan Hassan, a native of the region and a writer forThe National, said the timing and location given by rebels appeared to be accurate. It was not clear from the video what brought down the jet, and the different accounts could not be independently verified. No missile trail could be seen, but gunfire is heard; some large-caliber machine guns in the rebel arsenal could in certain circumstances bring down aircraft.A man said to be the pilot -- giving his name as Col. Mohammad Sleiman --appeared in a rebel videoshortly after state media said he ejected. The man said he had been on a bombing run. The jet differed from those seen in earlier videos andphotos, with wings appearingto be those of a type of MIG.
